Earlier, the European Union proposed a motion to require mobile phone manufacturers to unify the interface as USB-C. It is reported that Apple, which had been strongly opposed to it, has also begun to consider launching a USB-C interface for the next iPhone (finally looking forward to the USB-C interface, iPhone 14). Pro latest details exposure). However, a few days ago, the USB-IF organization also raised objections. Jeffrey L. Ravencraft, president of the association, published an article expressing his opposition to the EU’s use of the USB-C interface as a mobile phone process interface, believing that this would lead to operability and functionality problems, and cause confusion and controversy. He objected for two main reasons:
“Jeffrey L. RavencraftOppose the unification of the EUUSBCThere are two main reasons for the interface, One is that the EU standards are outdated, TheirUSBCThe interface standard does not take into account the latest developments, including those introduced not long ago240WRechargeableUSBCstandard.
The second point is the USB interface, although everyone knowsUSBCThe benefits of the interface, but it is mandatory to use this standard, Will also cause other types of USB interface withUSBEcological decoupling, which one should the market chooseUSBType of the interface.
There is also the part of the charging protocol. The EU standards also support Qualcomm’sQCCharging protocol, but USB-IFOrganizations do not certify by such standards, what they mainly promote is USB PDCharging standard.
In short, unification in the EUUSBCWhen it is a mobile phone standard interface, USBThe official organization unexpectedly jumped out to express its opposition, which is a bit confusing, and their reasons are rather peculiar, although it makes sense to listen carefully.”
First point: EU standards are outdated, and their USB-C interface standard does not take into account the latest developments, including the recently introduced USB-C standard for 240W charging.
The second point is that forcing the use of this standard will also lead to the decoupling of other types of USB interfaces from the USB ecosystem, which should allow the market to choose which type of USB interface.
The third point: In the part of the charging protocol, the EU standard also supports Qualcomm’s QC charging protocol, but the USB-IF organization will not certify such standards. They mainly promote the USB PD charging standard.
Popular science: USB-IF organization and Type-C protocol relationship
Headquartered in the United States, USB-IF is a non-profit organization, and the USB Implementers Forum aims to provide a support organization and forum for the promotion and popularization of USB technology (as defined in the USB specification). Through its logo and compliance program, USB-IF promotes the development of high-quality, compatible USB devices and promotes quality products that have passed compliance testing. More information can be obtained by visiting the USB-IF website, including the latest products and technical announcements released: www.usb.org, which has been developing and updating relevant standards for the industry for many years and can be called the top authority in the industry. As we all know, the Type-C charging protocol is formulated by the USB-IF organization. According to common sense, the European Union promotes the unification of the Type-C interface and should be welcomed and fully supported by the USB-IF. However, the latest media reports show that the USB-IF and Apple stands on the same front and firmly opposes the EU’s decision to unify the interface.
Popular Science: USB Type-C Certification Program
Judging from the fact that members of the USB-IF organization publicly oppose the unified charging interface of the European Union, the technical difficulty of unifying the charging interface is not large, but the coordination of interests will be difficult, and there will be many problems involving standard patents. At present, the USB Type-C launched by the association The certification specification is just one of them. As the USB Type-C ecosystem continues to grow, it will be essential to provide a standard verification protocol for certified USB Type-C chargers, devices, cables, and power supplies. It may be the trend that USB Type-C products can only be sold and shipped.
“There is also the part of the charging protocol. The EU standards also support Qualcomm’sQCCharging protocol, but USB-IFOrganizations do not certify by such standards, what they mainly promote is USB PDCharging standard.
In short, unification in the EUUSBCWhen it is a mobile phone standard interface, USBThe official organization unexpectedly jumped out to express its opposition, which is a bit confusing, and their reasons are rather peculiar, although it makes sense to listen carefully.
According to the European Union andUSBOrganize such an efficiency, it is estimated to be forcedUSBCIt’s difficult for the interface to succeed in the short term, and Apple still has enough time for iPhone the interface will only be upgraded in the next few years.”
Type-C related industry chain has attracted much attention
The Type C interface has many advantages, such as small size and thinness, high-speed transmission, positive and negative use, multi-purpose use, and improved power supply. Its popularity will be just around the corner. However, this Type C connector product must be used in a limited space to make a more refined product with many functions and must withstand higher current and perform high-speed data transmission, so its technical difficulty is very high, and the challenges are related to Opportunities exist. For those enterprises eager to seize the Type C market, only by solving technical problems can they win customers and win the market.
